Website hacking by online gambling syndicates is a cybercrime trend where hackers take over official websites—frequently those of government agencies, educational institutions, or public bodies—and alter their appearance to promote online gambling. This phenomenon is also known as content infiltration or website defacement.”
Once again, the hacking of Indonesian educational institutions and organizations’ websites to promote online gambling content is rampant. After the Diponegoro University Tuition Fee (UKT) website became a victim, recently, the website of the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem) was hacked with a similar modus operandi.
In response to this phenomenon, cybersecurity expert and practitioner from Vaksin.com, Alfons Tanujaya, emphasized that website managers play a crucial role in maintaining digital security. “In fact, it is the responsibility of website managers to secure websites,” said Alfons when contacted by Tempo on Tuesday, May 26, 2025.
He explained that hacking usually happens because of security loopholes on websites that are not properly addressed. Therefore, managers are expected to diligently update systems and address any potential vulnerabilities.
Nevertheless, Alfons believes that the government still has a strategic role in raising awareness and the capacity of website managers, especially for institutions that do not have adequate resources.
“The government can help by promoting website security and providing institutions with websites with assistance so that they are disciplined in updating their software,” he said.
Since new security loopholes will always emerge, managing websites is an ongoing task. “If they neglect to update applications or close security loopholes, then the websites could be exploited,” said Alfons.
In addition to socialization, Alfons suggests that the government take legal action against perpetrators of hacking and enforce regulations on institutions that neglect to maintain good websites and digital data security.
“The government may take strong legal action against hackers and penalize institutions that fail to properly implement website and data security measures, which could result in harm to data owners or the public,” he said. (Dari Tempo)
